Saisei Hen Stage 44 Arranged Battle Scene – The production notes

You’ve watched the video, know you want to know how it was made? Well here are the production notes for Stage 44 Arranged Battle Scene, Advent!! The Evil God that Brings Forth the End!

This stage happens to be a rather special one to fans of Getter Robo Armageddon, because in this stage Shin Getter gets it’s Stoner Sunshine attack and destroys Dr Saotome with it. In the anime, this happens while Yuusou plays in the background, adding up for a very epic scene indeed. Sadly Yuusou was never included in Saisei Hen as a theme song for Getter Robo Armageddon and I have received a multitude of requests to fix this.

If you haven’t seen it yet, here’s the arranged battle scene for stage 44:

The Battle

The plan for the video was to try keep it as faithful to the anime as possible while adding the SRW element to it. For the battle, I’ve decided that there would be five ‘acts’.

1. ZEXIS vs the Invaders
2. The fight against Shin Dragon
3. Getter team’s return
4. Getter vs Metal Beast Dragon
5. STONER SUNSHINE

Easy right? The major challenges were trying to include elements from the anime, such as the Black Getter and Tower getting toasted. The Shin Dragon part was kinda awkward since it never got blown up in the anime. I wanted Ryouma and co. to finish it off, but since they only appear after you blow up Shin Dragon, I had to substitute Gou’s Getter Beam for the kill.

The original draft had Godsigma in the battle and Guren Lagann would appear in the middle to save the guys. This idea was scrapped since I felt Godsigma didn’t add much, and instead Guren Lagann took it’s place.

In total, the editing took about 10-11 hours in all.

The Music

The first music is from First Contact. It’s from the part where the crew gets smashed by the Borg, and I thought it would go well with fighting ‘creepy’ Invaders.

Apart from that one song, the rest of the music was straight out of Getter Robo Armageddon. Most of the music was less than 2 minutes, so the real challenge was trying to cram everything I wanted to within all the time limit. In the end the battle with Shin Dragon had to be cut short slightly because of this.

The Stoner Sunshine Event

Using Yuusou was a bit of a challenge. The tune itself goes for around 2 minutes, meanwhile the Stoner Sunshine’s animation doesn’t even last half of that. In the anime, most of that time is Dr. Saotome blowing up! At one point I considered just using that for the remainder of the arranged battle, but I thought that would be cheating.

I decided to use some clips from the anime which help to lead into the whole event. For the rest of the time, I needed filler, so instead of having Saotome sitting around waiting for his ass to get blown up, I decided to make a combo attack of sorts. This is Super Robot Wars after all and it’s all about the crossovers that aren’t possible in the anime. The idea was that this combo attack would keep Saotome ‘busy’ while the Shin Getter charged up the Stoner Sunshine.

Aquarion got it’s Solar Sword in the stage, so that was an easy choice. I went for Guren Lagann because it’s Giga Drill Maximum attack had a nice uppercut to send the Metal Beast Getter into the air.

Another challenge was merging the Yuusou heard in the anime with the one in the OST. You see, they are actually slightly different! The one in the anime has a slower tempo and lasts longer, while the OST version is faster. It was a hell of a nightmare trying to make sure one flowed smoothly into the other, but I think it worked out in the end.

Lastly, Ryouma’s Stoner Sunshine yell is also directly from the anime. I felt the version in the game was a bit weaker compared to the anime version.

How it could’ve been better

As always, after I publish each video, I notice mistakes and other stuff that could’ve been improved on:

  • After the Black Getter blows up, I could’ve added a clip of Gou screaming from the anime
  • I wish I could’ve featured Getter-2 a bit more, but ran out of time.
  • I’d add another cut-in of Shin Getter charging up during the final combo scene.

I really, really wanted to do a Change Attack battle between the Metal Dragon and Shin Getter, but since the Metal Dragon can’t transform into it’s other forms outside of it’s Change Attack, this just wasn’t possible.

That’s all for now, I might consider making a version 1.1 of this video in the future to right some wrongs, but for know I think this’ll do 😛
